Weekend Update 5-10-20

Video Weekend Update YouTube link: https://youtu.be/Eq-ojrZ1eJo

The Fall Marching Show Reveal video is posted on the band website homepage. Wanted to say Thank You to my husband Brian Gill for making that video. He also included a special section in there – where you see cliffs and ocean shore – that’s shoreline of an island called Las Palmas de Gran Canaria – in the Canary Islands – where I was born. They are islands owned by Spain. This show means a lot to me as it is a show about my heritage. So happy to share this with you guys! We hope you enjoyed watching it AND I especially enjoyed your reaction videos! Thanks to all who submitted. Near the end of this video update, is a compilation of the reaction videos I received – check it out – so fun to see everyone’s reactions especially since we couldn’t all be together for the reveal.

Monday we also unveiled our Senior Spotlight Video on our website homepage. Thank you to Sam Foreman for putting this together! A wonderful tribute to our 2020 Seniors. Hope you enjoyed it!

Congratulations to our own Doye Baker!

He competed in the Regional Citizen Bee.  It is a statewide civic education program and competition.

Doye placed first on Friday and will compete at the state level later this month. Good Luck Doye!

Results for Band Placement, Drum Major, Section Leader, and Band Officers will be posted on our website (Students page) Tomorrow, May 11th.

In regards to Band Officer voting – the two students who submitted an audition video, ran unopposed, so Congratulations to Sam Foreman – Captain, and Emily Bryan – 1st Lt. Here is a link to a google form for students to sign up if they are interested in any of the other band officer positions and directors will choose those positions later in the summer.

Once you view the results, and if you have any questions or would like to seek feedback, please listen to this advice.

1. Do not email in an emotional state.

2. IF you email, and want to know why you didn’t make a certain band or get a certain position you tried out for, please ask the following question “what can I do better in the future to get what I want”? AND ask that question in a respectable manner. None of the results are personal and are based on many factors including (but not limited to) growth as a student leader, musician, potential, eligibility, attitude, volunteerism, and experience, to name a few.

3. Do not ask us to comment on any other student. Ask only about what you can do better or differently in the future to yield a different result.

4. Direct your questions about band placement to your appropriate conductor – those decisions were based largely on their opinions as they are the ones who worked with you individually the most over the year AND remember – we will re-audition again in December so you have a chance to prove yourself if you feel you weren’t placed correctly.

5. Lastly, with most all of you who auditioned for a position – you were all great candidates and unfortunately, we just can’t take everyone, so we had to make some hard decisions. Please know that several of you didn’t do anything wrong, you just need to keep plugging along and your day will come!

*Anyone who made a position of leadership with the M100 will have a leadership contract to sign – coming soon. You will also need to be present for the Leadership training on July 27th and 28th.

Once again – you will find results on our Students page on the Band Website. And, don’t forget, the Password to the Students Page is M100!

Summer Band is still scheduled to begin in late July. A Colorguard and Percussion Camp is scheduled for July 20-24, Band Leadership on the 27th and 28th, and All students back for Summer Band on July 29th. Please see the Band Calendar – all dates are updated on the calendar. Please also check that Power Point I mentioned before for summer dates/times.

The M100 is signed up for the Annual Belton 4th of July Parade and we will play Grandioso again. Mr. Kwaku will be making this music available for you this coming week. Please watch for it in email! We will let you know if anything changes regarding this parade.

There will be Belton HS Band Booster Meeting tomorrow at 6:30pm on Zoom of course.

Music Scholarship Opportunity for Seniors.

Seniors, if you are interested in a music scholarship from McLennan Community College -

the deadline to apply has been extended to May 1. MCC is still looking for all instruments and students don’t have to be a music major to be eligible.

NEW & CURRENT MEMBER POWER POINT was released this past Thursday, April 30th. If you haven’t already seen it, please view it on the band website home page. This is a narrated powerpoint presentation with information concerning this summer’s band camp, fall rehearsals, games, and contests, fees, and many other pieces of information about the BHS band.

SCHOOL OWNED INSTRUMENTS.

If you haven’t already - please email the appropriate director with 2 pics - 1 of the instrument serial number and 1 of the case with the serial number clearly visible in the photo. Need these pics ASAP!! Woodwinds - email shannon.gill@bisd.net Brass - email Kevin.kwaku@bisd.net Guard - email cody.hudnall@bisd.net INSTRUMENT / ITEM RETRIEVAL

We are working on plans to distribute personal possessions from classrooms and lockers. We will be finalizing dates in the coming days but for now, please keep the week of May 18th penciled in on your calendar. We are trying to secure a couple of evenings that week in order to do pick-ups and drop-offs at BHS. I recently also found out that because of construction, the brass locker room is totally inaccessible for at least the next 4 weeks. Nothing will be damaged in there, the lockers have been pushed all the way to the door furthest from the band library and you cannot even walk into the locker room -all the lockers are shoved together and the backside is facing the one accessible door. More information to come soon!

Keep Up With Your Assignments

We are almost to the end of the school year and your last assignments from us will be during the week of May 11-15. After that, you may have the rest of the month to catch up on any missed assignments before we turn in final grades.

M100 MARCHING TECHNIQUE VIDEOS.

Mr. Kwaku is providing videos explaining the marching technique we use at BHS. Please view these videos and start preparing for next year.

There is a google classroom class set up to provide opportunities for students to submit videos of themselves demonstrating the techniques discussed in the videos. (optional)
